About Duluth GA
The city of Duluth GA was originally named for Daniel Greysolon Du Luth who was a French captain and explorer in the late 1600s and early 1700s. In the early 1800's, Duluth was part of the Cherokee Indian Territory. Duluth's growth was ensured by Evan P. Howell.
Howell developed the town Howell Crossing, and his vision was to link the North and South by rail. In a passionate presentation, he persuaded Congress to finance a railroad connecting Howell Crossing with Duluth, Minnesota. Grateful for the opportunity to realize his vision, Howell felt it was appropriate to change the name of Howell Crossing to Duluth in 1871. With the railroad in place, Duluth was poised for growth.
In 1919 Gwinnett County was created by an act of the General Assembly of Georgia, opening the area up to settlers and development.
